Materials you will need

What are the materials and tools you will need for this 3-tier pallet raised bed?

This project has a few pieces and you need to cut and measure a lot of things. You will need:

  • Crowbar to dismantle the pallets without damaging them
  • Hammer
  • Nails or bolts (we like blots because they provide a more precise and strong grip)
  • Electric or manual saw
  • Electric or manual screwdriver
  • Tape measure

Some other materials that are not mandatory but highly recommended for safety reasons are:

  • Gloves
  • Goggles

Pallet parts

Here you have a view of the pallet we are using for this furniture along with an exploded view of the pallet itself. That way you can locate each one of the parts used for the model. Note that some parts might not be used for this specific model.

Building steps

Step 1: cut the pieces you will need

The first step is to dismantle the pallet and then cut the pieces to size. You will need 8 different sizes of wooden strips.

Step 2: building the base

After cutting all the needed pieces to size it’s time to start building the main frame.

To do that you will need 4 of the purple wooden strips and 2 of the blue wooden strips. Attached them using decking screws creating 3 equal spaces.

Step 3: reinforcing the base

The next step is to add another level to our pallet planter so it has more depth. Simply add another level of the same wooden strips on top of the first one.

The space in the front is already on height and on the next steps we will just work on the ones that are on the back.

Step 4: building the second and third levels

In this step we will rise two of the three spaces. The one in front it’s already on the correct height.

To do that add another wooden strip 1/3 long compared to the original ones.

Also add 3 more of the purple wooden strips to create height in two of the three spaces of the pallet planter that are on the back

Step 5: finishing the third (and highest) level and reinforcing

The last step is also 2 steps to finish our pallet planter:

  1. Add another level of height to the last space of our pallet planter (the shorter red wooden strips located on each side). That way we create the highest of the three levels of our pallet planter.
  2. As well, we will reinforce the whole structure putting vertical wooden strips inside of the three boxes, in the corners. Like that we give the whole model structural strength.

Step 6 (optional): you could use less pieces

As an option, you could also create the same structure using less pieces, leaving the bottom inside level free, so all the spaces communicate through the bottom.

This will be filled-up with soil anyway, so could work as well. Will not have as much structural strenght as the complete model, but if you put the planters against a wall or another object, this should not be a problem.

Enjoy this new 3-tier pallet planter for your garden! 🙂
