What are the materials and tools you will need for this tall bird house?
Since it is a simple project, you will need:
Some other materials that are not mandatory but highly recommended for safety reasons are:
Here you have a view of the pallet we are using for this furniture along with an exploded view of the pallet itself. That way you can locate each one of the parts used for the model. Note that some parts might not be used for this specific model.
The first step is to cut the pieces of the pallet to the desired size. For this step you will need 2 of the red color slab of the pallet (see image gallery above) and cut it as shown in the picture.
We made the entry whole 30 mm in diameter, but this can vary according to what type of bird you want to attract.
Bear in mind that the factors that make a bird house suitable for a type of bird or another are:
So with such a small entry hole and the material (wood) the bird house is suitable for very small birds like for example bluebirds.
The second step is to cut the roof, the sides and the floor of our tall pallet bird house.
For this we will use 2 wide slabs of the pallet (yellow color as seen in the gallery above) and cut as you can see in the image.
After we have all the pieces cut it’s time to start the assembly process.
The first step of the assembly process is to build the rear and the left side of our tall bird house.
To keep the two rear slabs together we used three perpendicular slabs, you can use two or three pieces of the leftovers you will have to build that.
The left side of the bird house goes bolted on the inside, as you can see in the picture. Do not bolt it on the outside.
The next step is to build the floor. Place the piece of wood that acts as the bottom of the bird house in place and screw it gently on two sides.
It won’t be strong, we just want to keep it in place before assembling the left side in the next step.
Now place the left side of the bird box in place and bolt it from the rear and with the floor.
After this step you should already have a quite strong structure.
In this step we will build the front part of the bird house. Place the two slabs that have the entrance hole together and bolt them on the side and to the floor base.
If you feel like the front part needs some structural strength you can add 2 perpendicular slabs like we did in the rear part (step 3). Adding one on the top of the front part and one just below the entry hole will work like a charm.
After we have all the sides and the floor ready, we just need to close our pallet bird house.
It’s time to put the roof in place.
The front part of the birdhouse roof is placed before the back part, so that in case of rain water does not enter the interior.
The last step is to finish our tall pallet bird house and make sure is stable and strong on every corner.
Hold it with both hands and make some force in different directions to detect if it needs to be reinforced somewhere.
Maybe you need to tighten some bolts or add some more to achieve perfect structural strength.
Also after it is finished you can choose to sand it and leave it with a natural wood look, paint it, protect it with lineseed oil or leave it as it is. You can be as creative as you want here 🙂
We hope you enjoy your tall bird house made with pallets and your birds in the garden too!
