Pallet seat with storage

Features:

Render of a pallet seat box where you can see the box and the cover for it
This small square seat box with storage inside is perfect for a coffee table in the living room, as a seat in the garden, or also as a side seat for the bathroom. The best is that it’s empty inside so you can also use it as a storage box!

Materials you will need

What are the materials and tools you will need for this pallet seat box?

Since it is a simple project, you will need:

  • Hammer
  • Nails or screws (we like screws, like decking screws, because they provide a more precise and strong grip)
  • Electric or manual saw
  • Tape measure

Some other materials that are not mandatory but highly recommended for safety reasons are:

  • Gloves
  • Goggles

Pallet parts

Here you have a view of the pallet we are using for this furniture along with an exploded view of the pallet itself. That way you can locate each one of the parts used for the model. Note that some parts might not be used for this specific model.

Building steps

Step 1: building the floor

Floor and legs of a pallet seat box render with measures of the different parts

The first step is to build the floor and the 4 legs of our pallet seat box or storage box. To do so we will use 4 blocks of the pallet as the legs, plus 4 slabs for the floor.

Bear in mind that each one of the green slabs (422 x 100 mm) are in reality one third of the yellow slab. In other words: if you cut a yellow slab in three equal parts, you get three green slabs. You can see all the parts in the exploded view of the pallet a bit more up in the page for a better orientation.

To reinforce the whole structure we will use thin slabs 334 x 22 mm.

To put the legs in place we recommend you use 3 screws for each of them, making a triangle.

Step 2: building one side

Building one side of the pallet seat box. The floor is already built. The wall for the side has three slab to reinforce the structure.

The second step is building the first wall of our pallet seat box. We will use 3 of the 334 x 22 mm slabs to give the wall structural strength.

Step 3: add another side to the box

Render view of the building one side of the pallet seat box. The floor is already built plus the first wall. In this step we add the second out of four sides.

In this step we will put together the frist two walls of our pallet seat box. Like in the step before, use 3 334 x 22 mm slabs to give the wall structural strength and attach it both to the other wall and to the floor.

Step 4: closing the sides of the box

Render view of the instructions to build a pallet seat box. In this image we see the box being closed in its four sides.

Time to close the pallet box with the two sides missing. Note that each side wall is on top of each other on one side and outside of the other one.

Step 5: building the cover

Rendered view made with Autodesk of the pallet seat box on its finished state. This last step is to build the cover for the seat box.

The last step is to build the cover for our pallet seat box. Again, 2 slabs 334 x 22 mm to give it structural strength will be enough. If you want you can make a small hole so it’s easier to lift the cover with one or two fingers, even though we didn’t do it in this design.

Step 6: finishing up our pallet seat box

Rendered image of the box/chair made with pallets completely closed.

The last step is to put the cover in place and check that the structure is strong enough. Reinforce the corners with metal angles if you feel the structure is not strong enough for your weight.
